Are Safety Helmets Really Necessary?

If you are planning to take part in horse riding, skating, cycling or any form of motor sports, one of the most basic and important safety precautions is to wear a safety helmet.

You might think that it's a waste of money, since you're only participating in this activity once. But consider the statistics released recently, that one quarter of the people brought into emergency rooms in US hospitals are there with head injuries. How many of these people could have been saved had they been wearing safety helmets?

If you are taking part in a one off activity, you can keep the costs down by renting helmets instead of buying them. In choosing the right safety helmet for you, you should always make sure that the helmet is of the right fit as one that is too loose might slip off easily and defeats the purpose of wearing it anyway. Unlike buying shoes, you should never buy helmets for children that are one size bigger just to save on future expenses. Your children's lives are worth much more than that.

The quality and features of each helmet might also be different. A modular helmet for example, is great for communicating with friends and family without requiring the user to take it off. It's also a lot more convenient for those wearing glasses to put on or take off the helmet. The quality of the helmet too plays a part. You might feel tempted to cut costs by purchasing lower quality helmets, but you will surely be cursing yourself if you get into an accident.
