Building a Horse Barn in Tough Economic Times

The state of the current national economy has really put a crimp on people who had planned to build a horse barn this year. Many banks are not lending at this time, which is forcing people to look for alternative methods to build their barns as economically as possible.

Many folks have sent me some photos of how they were able to construct their horse barns using alternative methods and materials and these structures have turned out very well.

One method a lady sent me photos of was she purchased several large steel-roofed carports and assembling the horse stalls inside of the structures using the carports as the roof and support frame. She then enclosed the sides and the back of the structures using the wooden walls of the horse stalls. This method she estimated saved her over $8000.00 compared to the cost of a conventional pole barn style of structure.

Another method some people are using is purchasing a fabric-covered structure marketed by several companies and installing modular horse stalls inside of these. By using pre-fabricated or modular horse stalls, these do not require the use of support posts and can be moved when needed if a more permanent structure is built in the future. Support post construction horse stalls can be built as well, but doing that method does make the stalls fairly permanent and would involve a lot of labor to tear down eventually.

I have become a fan of the fabric-covered structure method as I have personally owned 2 of these in the past 25 years and they holdup extremely well in the weather conditions we experience here in Ohio. I was a bit skeptical in the beginning, as I was concerned about how a structure like that would hold up in heavy wind and snow, but was very impressed after the first few seasons of use.

Building a barn in hard times like we are experiencing now just takes a bit of innovation and thinking outside of the box. If you have built a horse barn using other alternative methods, feel free to drop me a note.
